Meet Rain.

A man sitting on the floor with his legs spread and his hands on his stomach, leaning against a white wall. He is wearing a black blazer, a white shirt, blue jeans, white socks, and black shoes.

Rain Tolk is an Estonian filmmaker, actor and writer based in Tallinn. He works across feature films, documentaries, television and advertising, both in front of and behind the camera.

His interests tend towards dark humour, human contradictions and the absurdities of everyday life. He is especially interested in characters who are difficult to categorise, situations that resist easy explanations, and stories that find comedy in unexpected places.

His acting credits include Autumn Ball, winner of the Orizzonti Award at the Venice Film Festival. His directing work includes Aurora (2025), co-directed with Andres Maimik, and Messed Up, winner of the EFTA Award for Best Television Series.

As a director, he is drawn to characters who are convinced they're doing the right thing, even when the evidence suggests otherwise. His work often explores the uncomfortable territory where comedy and tragedy overlap.

He likes commercials that feel like little films — the kind where the characters have lives beyond the thirty seconds we spend with them. Humour helps. So does a good cast. And occasionally, a perfectly timed silence.

He continues to develop and direct fiction and television projects while working as an actor in Estonian and international productions.

“Rain is a warm-hearted, witty, and deeply thoughtful person, and all of these qualities are present in his work. He brings great sensitivity and depth to every performance, alongside a rare ability to see the bigger picture. He is always fully present in a scene, bringing something genuine, truthful, and unexpected to every moment. There is a freshness to his work that makes his performances feel alive and never merely rehearsed. Rain is never focused solely on his own part, but is always thinking about how a scene serves the story as a whole.

As a director, I felt incredibly fortunate to work with Rain. His understanding of dramaturgy, his creative courage, and his ability to see the bigger picture made him an invaluable collaborator. He has a remarkably broad understanding of dramaturgy and an intuitive grasp of different genres and styles, which makes him an exceptionally versatile and insightful actor. He brings intelligence, generosity, and curiosity into the creative process, always looking for ways to make a scene more truthful, surprising, and alive.

Above all, Rain is fearless in his commitment to the work. He throws himself into every scene wholeheartedly and has a wonderful instinct for knowing when to push further rather than hold back. There were moments when I found myself being cautious or even ready to let go of an idea, and Rain would encourage me to keep going, to trust the scene, and to follow our choices all the way through. That kind of courage and creative generosity is invaluable. Rain not only elevates his own performance, but also inspires the people around him to be bolder and more ambitious in their work.”
